Jégo Yves, Secretary of State for Overseas: "Tourism is an extraordinary asset for Mayotte"

Monday 29 September 2008

Jégo Yves, Secretary of State for Overseas, was on an official visit to the island on 26 and 27 September 2008, for the third time in six months. The main purpose of the visit was to update elected officials and economic and social actors of the island referendum on the future (in "March 2009" said Yves Jégo) concerning the status and place of Mayotte in the French Republic (now Mayotte is a departmental community, not a department) and the consequences of choices made by Mahorais.

Here, on www.ilemayotte.com, 1st internet tourist guide of the island, we focus on what was required Yves Jégo on tourism.

"Tourism is an extraordinary asset for Mayotte. You have an outstanding heritage, Mayotte is one of the most beautiful pearls of the Indian Ocean, you can be the guardians for future generations. Tourism development will be through your lagoon these landscapes so beautiful virgin of any construction. (...) The economic development can not be done, more than elsewhere in Mayotte, against nature. (...) Make Mayotte, in 25 years, an island green, the first bio-department french "said enthusiastically, Yves Jégo.

But there are some prerequisites for this beautiful "road map". So the actors of the tourist island in the lagoon, rather tired by the slow moving files pertaining to this sector (requests for building permits, detailed information and guidance on up to the standards of facilities - hotel, guest room and restaurant - as required by the applicable code of Tourism in Mayotte since 1st January 2008, clear communication on the specific attractions of Mayotte ...) waiting Yves Jégo meet a minimum on two key issues for tourism development Island:

    * When will be finally adopted by the State Council on Management Plan and Sustainable Development (SPSD) of Mayotte, and why is it still blocked?

The Layout and Sustainable Development (SPSD) of Mayotte is an important document for the future economic and environmental development of the island. Particularly because it allows for exceptions in relation to the "law Littoral. After being voted on 17 December 2004 by the General Council of Mayotte, is to date still not finally approved by the State.
PADD approves the construction of "tourist accommodation" on nine tracks. (To date there are only three hotels located on the seafront in Mayotte: The Maori N'Gouja Garden, the hotel and the hotel Sakouli Trevan). Tip: there are about 400 rooms (all inclusive, with the lodgings and guest rooms) and more specifically Mayotte 780 beds including 50 double rooms and commercially marketed by tour operators.
Yves Jégo response: "The PADD will be finally adopted before the end of the year"

    * What about extending the airport runway to allow direct flights in both directions, Europe> Mayotte?

Today the track is too short for large holders of Mayotte to take off fully loaded. And the prices of air transport too high for the flow Mayotte> Europe is therefore - today only 50 passengers depart daily from Mayotte to the metropolis. Everything fits, of course.
Yves Jégo response: "In the next decade, Mayotte has an international airport. This is provided in the State plan - CDM (= community of Mayotte) 2008/2014, signed on 28 March 2008.
Finally, Yves Jégo gave appointment to the tourism industry players in Paris on 21 November 2008 the foundation for national tourism overseas.
