The economic future of the Overseas considered by the Council of Ministers on 30 July

Tuesday 15 July 2008

The bill program for economic development and promoting excellence overseas "will be presented next July 30 in Council of Ministers. It will then be considered by Parliament.

This bill has three objectives: promoting economic development to create new jobs, meet the housing crisis by encouraging the revival of social housing, social diversity and home ownership; reinforce equality between the territories comprising France filling handicaps due to the remoteness and taking into account the particular difficulties of certain territories.
Various provisions of this Act shall apply in Mayotte.
On July 2, the prefect of Mayotte, Vincent Bouvier, said during a press conference: "There are provisions in this bill that are not applicable in Mayotte, but it is related to the statutory of the island [which is a community department and not a department at the moment-Ed]. We are entering a phase of preparation for departmentalization. The referendum of April or May 2009 [on the status of Mayotte-Ed] is followed by a specific law in Mayotte in which we logically find a number of provisions of this law".
