The humpback whales have arrived in the lagoon of Mayotte
Wednesday 15 July 2009
The first humpback whales of the season in 2009 were observed in the lagoon that identifies the island of Mayotte on the weekend of 27 and 28 June Like every year, they arrive in late June or early July and leave in late October.
The lagoon serves as a nursery and after farrowing, the females come to the shelter of the reef to feed their small and educate in order to prepare for the great migration to the Antarctic in early austral summer.
Humpback whales are the largest whales. But they are among the more spectacular because they are the only ones to make prodigious jumps out often completely out of the water.
